History

INTENT

At Holy Cross Catholic Primary Academy, we believe that high-quality history lessons inspire children to want to know more about the past and to think and act as historians. Children have opportunities to investigate and interpret the past, understand chronology, build an overview of Britain’s past as well as that of the wider world.

The curriculum ensures that all children: Gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world which helps to stimulate their curiosity to know more about the past; Are encouraged to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement; Begin to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

The curriculum intent for each sequence of learning is set out for each year group in terms of both knowledge and skills.

IMPLEMENTATION

• History is taught half-termly in Key Stage 1 and termly in Key Stage 2, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum.

• Lessons carefully plan for progression of both knowledge of the topic and History skills.

• Visits and themed days enhance the learning experiences.

IMPACT

Our History Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression.

• If children are evidencing the knowledge, skills and understanding of the taught curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress.

• Children are equipped with historical skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3 and for life as an adult in the wider world.

• Children will enjoy History lessons and will look forward to finding out more.
