It is important for pupils to develop as independent, enthusiastic and expressive writers who are able to write in a meaningful way. We aim for all children to be able to use a range of forms for a variety of purposes and audiences, and so be confident in their choice of genre and language style for a specific purpose.  Pupils should also regard themselves as writers and value their own work and that of others.

Our teaching strategy is based on the use of popular and effective models, like Talk for Writing, the use of films and creating a real purpose for writing through a Mantle of the Expert approach.

Grammar

For this reason we encourage children to use writing as means to communicate ideas and information to aaudience through grammatically accurate texts, making good use of the features and conventions of language.

Grammar is, therefore, taught in discreet lessons, aimed at enabling every pupil to be able to choose and use the correct form when writing or formal speaking.

Spellings

We aim for all pupils to develop as independent and accurate spellers who are confident to use an evolving and adventurous vocabulary in their own writing.  We believe that they should have a range of spelling strategies, which they can use to attempt unknown words, and a sound knowledge of irregular high frequency words for use in their daily work.

Spellings are taught both discreetly, and during reading and writing lessons.

Handwriting

We believe that it is important for pupils to be able to write clearly and develop a fluent and legible handwriting style.  Presentation should be neat in all work and in accordance with the school handwriting policy.

Handwriting is taught discreetly in regular lessons. Pupils are given a handwriting pen when ready, usually between year 3 and year 4, and the occasion is marked by the official presentation of a ‘Pen Licence’.

Drama

We encourage pupils to use a range of dramatic forms to express feelings and ideas both verbally and non verbally. 

In Foundation Stage pupils have planned role play areas linked to current themes and topics.

Drama is used throughout the school to support writing, and a wealth of techniques are used to enable children to articulate their ideas, emotions and feelings.
