Art and Design
Intent
It is our intent at Holy Cross Catholic Primary Academy to provide children with a high quality education in art and design which will engage, inspire and challenge them, equipping children with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As children progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.
Implementation
Across the school, our children will be offered a broad and balanced range of art activities which ensure breadth, depth, relevance, continuity and progression, and which take account of all needs and aspirations.
As they progress through each year group, children will develop their techniques and skills in the processes of Sculpture, Painting, Printmaking, Textiles, Collage and digital Media.
Fundamental skills such as drawing, sketching, use of shape and colour and imagination are built upon with each new topic so that children feel confident to apply these independently.
They think critically about creative work, including their own, and they explore great artists and designers.
Impact
Our children enjoy the self-expression and creativity that they experience in Art and Design. They are always keen to learn new skills and techniques and they work hard to perfect those shown to them. They experience a range of media and use it confidently to express their ideas.
The children’s art is cross-curricular, helping them to show their understanding in other subject areas such as RE, History and Geography. Good use is made of the outdoor environment and computing equipment.
Within an art unit, children explore an artist or piece of art, practise the skills needed, generate ideas, create final pieces for an audience, and evaluate their work. Our skills based curriculum enables all children to make good progress.
Children from Year 1 take pride over their own sketchbooks and they are proud to see their work displayed in prominent areas in and around our school.
