Physical Education
At Holy Cross all children in years 1 through to 6 participate in 2 hours of timetabled PE each week with additional continuous provision in the outside area.
Our PE curriculum provides children with an opportunity to learn and develop their skills in a number of disciplines. These include:
- Games
- Dance
- Gymnastics
- Athletics
- Swimming
- Outdoor Activities-Forest School
We also hold a range of extra-curricular sports activities for the duration of the school year for children in EYFS to Year 6.
The P.E Curriculum
KS1: Pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
KS2: Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Regular participation in PE and sports provides great benefits for children both physically and academically. These include:
- Promoting healthy growth and development
- Helping to achieve and maintain a healthy body.
- Improving cardiovascular fitness, balance, co-ordination, flexibility and strength.
- Improving posture
- Assisting with the development of gross motor and fine motor skills.
- Helping to establish connections between different parts of the brain.
- Improving concentration and thinking skills
- Improving confidence, self-esteem and social skills.
